In late September, British designer-makers had the unique opportunity to submit their products to be part of the next RAted range. Many of the Crafty Foxers jumped at the chance and headed to the Open Call to pitch to the Royal Academy buyers. Emily Rubner, part of the RAted team, explains to us what the new venture is all about:
“RAted is a brand new range of hand-picked products from fresh and emerging designer-makers. This exciting range is showcased at the Royal Academy's Burlington Gardens shop in the heart of Mayfair, and also reaches a global audience in our industry-leading online shop. The RA Retail team has developed a reputation for creating exclusive, bespoke products in conjunction with our Royal Academicians – the artists who lead the RA – since the early 1980s. Over the years, the RA has supported and collaborated with many designers, building a range of uniquely inspired products for the RA shop – and the RAted range is just the latest in the series of collaborations. Handpicked original designs specially chosen for the launch of the RAted range have proven extremely successful with our design-led audience.”
Rod from Rodology was previously chosen to be part of the project. RAted came about for Rodology as a direct result of the Crafty Fox! Whilst selling his wares at the spring market at the Bussey Bulding in Peckham, he met a gentleman who took his business card,
“We can’t have talked for more than 30 seconds before he moved on, but those 30 seconds led to an email from him a week or two later and asking me to send him a wholesale price list. Turns out he was a buyer for the Royal Academy of Arts and they were about to launch a new initiative for up and coming designer makers called RAted!”
Since then Rod’s range through RAted has done really well and one or two of pieces have gone on to become best sellers. They’ve placed several decent orders and he’s slowly stockpiling more watch movements in the run up to the Christmas rush. It just goes to show that markets and craft fairs are a great way to showcase your work and more importantly, you never know who will drop by your stall and what opportunities may come about!
Vicky from Woah There Pickle was also contacted by the RA in the summer. She had the exciting opportunity to work with the Rated team to produce a new product to sell through their shop,
“They were particularly fond of my coin range of prints. We thought about a product we could use the designs on and landed on some quirky hanging decorations being Christmas and all. I also produced a set based on the Drain covers that I have an ongoing collection of too, so they're not your average Christmas decorations! I love the designs we chose as I did them in the first place because they were everyday objects that often don't get noticed for how beautiful the are. Now they've become even more unexpected as Christmas decorations.”
The ethos of RAted is to promote new design and to support young or emerging designers. Products designed by British designers are carefully chosen and curated based on the merit of aesthetic, originality, form and function. Each quarter the work of 8-12 designers are selected for inclusion online and in-store. Four products from each designer are chosen - we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us! Keep an eye on the Royal Academy website & twitter for the opportunity to participate in future open calls.
You can also meet all of the designers mentioned in this article in person at one of the forthcoming Crafty Fox Christmas Markets. There are different traders taking part each day. Browse the trader listings below:
