Leeds Market Shopping Guide

For the first time, Crafty Fox Market is leaving London and heading north for a very special event in Leeds at Black Swan, 37 Call Lane, on 4th and 5th June. In preparation, we thought we'd share a shopping guide with you from Harriet Vaight who is a owner of independent gift store Chirpy in Chapel Allerton, North Leeds. Here she shares with us some of her favourite traders to look out for over the weekend. For full trader listings for the Leeds event click here.

I’ve always loved going to craft markets, there’s always so many interesting things to look at and it’s great to meet the maker of the lovely things you’re looking at, it gives you a real sense of where it’s come from and the thought and effort that has gone in to create them. Visiting the local craft markets in Leeds was part of the inspiration to start Chirpy, as I felt there needed to be more places for makers to sell their wares. And I still visit them now to find new products for the shop and meet the makers, it’s so much nicer to see the products and meet someone in person rather than an email.

The London Crafty Fox markets have always been on my radar as they are a permanent fixture in my London based brother and sister-in-law’s calendar and they kindly do a scout for me, sending a pile of business cards of potential new Chirpy suppliers after a market. For example, Brighton based Fawn and Rose who will be at the Leeds market have been stocked at the shop after their recommendation, and I’ve received a cute little bird brooch from I Am Acrylic as a Christmas present from them which they got at the Brixton market.

Crafty Fox is such a fantastic shopping opportunity and these items are on my shopping list for the weekend at the Leeds market…

I love everything mid-century modern, and Nook of the North’s mid-century style jewellery and accessories are inspired by her favourite colours and shapes from 1950's pattern design. I love the simplicity of them, but they have something a bit different too which makes them more unique and special. The brass pendants in particular are a great everyday piece that can be worn on their own or layered with other pieces, and the leather and fabric pieces would make a great visual statement on a plain coloured top or dress.

Every one of the Primrose Parasol’s embroidery hoops makes me chuckle. Lovely funky contemporary fabrics, and then just the funniest cheekiest sayings that you’re really not expecting. Trouble is, they’re all so good, I can’t pick a favourite! Oh well, might just have to get a few, they would look nice together as a set of 3 anyway… ;)

I’m a sucker for anything with an ‘H’ on and have at least 3 ‘H’ necklaces, so can’t wait to add a ‘H’ tee shirt and bag to the collection by Font Not Found. Their graphic is really modern and that little bit different.  And as the tee shirts come in kids, women and mens sizes, they make a great prezzy, especially for someone who might be a bit tricky to buy for as they’re something which will suit everyone.

Not my usual style, but I can’t help but be drawn into the atmosphere and charm of Clare Caulfield’s artwork. Great if you’ve done some travelling and want a momento of a city like New York, Paris and Prague, as well as local sights such as the Leeds shopping arcades, York Minster, Haworth and Whitby. They are so interesting to look at, and will be timeless, something to keep forever.

Geometrics are very much on trend at the mo, and there’s something really bold and different with Ding Ding's designs that makes them stand out. I love to write a to do list and can’t wait to get a funky clipboard to clip it to, as well as getting myself a new purse for summer.

How adorable are Amy Panda’s badges, brooches and finger puppets?!?!  And they’re made from acrylic felt so they’re suitable for vegans and anyone allergic to wool.  Great for kids (and adults) who love animals, the puppets are especially brilliant for story-telling and would look really cool as a group in a pencil jar, after all, who can resist a monkey in a bow tie?!

Just absolutely LOVE the bold and graphic designs by Sheffield based Scarlett and Valentine,  the cushions are a super cool addition for any superhero’s room, whether they be a small or large super-person.  And her prints would be a bold and cheerful addition to any home.  Very reasonably priced too.

Spoiler alert to all the fella’s in my family- you will be getting a Tea Party at the Zoo perspex animal comb for your next birthday / Christmas!  They are just the coolest thing ever in the world and would make combing your hair so much more fun!  Have got my eye on a crocodile necklace too…
