Spring Markets - Meet Guest Curator: Emily Rubner
It's a difficult challenge to select makers for our events so we work with invited guest curators. This helps to keep our events fresh and gives each one a unique flavour. Meet our latest invited curator: Emily Rubner, a buyer for the Royal Academy of Arts.
Tell us more about your role at the Royal Academy of Arts
"My role as a Buyer for the Royal Academy of Arts involves sourcing and developing products for the RA shop and online, alongside directing the RA's unique Rated range: showcasing emerging British design talent. As a Buyer I am always on the look out for fresh and inspiring products to be featured in-store and online. With a background in Fine Art, graduating from Chelsea College of Art, and having worked in retail for a number of years, I strive to find a good balance between working with designers on a commercial level whilst still ensuring that they are supported and encouraged to develop - supporting the Arts remains central to the RA’s purpose."
What is RAted all about?
"The ethos of RAted is to promote new design and to support young or emerging artists and designers. Products designed by British artists and designers are carefully chosen and curated based on the merit of aesthetics, originality, form and function. The range features the work of 8-12 designers selected for inclusion online and in-store. Four products are chosen from each designer and the range is refreshed three times a year. An additional Bestsellers category has been included to highlight and include the bestselling products each time the range is refreshed."
"RAted was first introduced at the RA in the in June 2014 and has proven extremely successful with the RA’s design-led audience. Rated held it’s first Open Call submission last September, where over 300 applicants were whittled down to the 9 designers in the January range which has just launched. Many more designers have also been selected for development for future ranges."
