Maker Interviews: Christmas behind the scenes

This week we spoke briefly to four talented makers about their experiences during the festive season; from increased orders to keeping up with Christmas markets. Whether you're a fellow designer or an avid shopper of all things handmade these interviews will give you an insight into a small business owner's life in the run up to Christmas.

Hello! Tell us a little about yourself!

Hello, my names Mica and I’m a jewellery designer working from my studio in Southsea, with the help of my wire fox terrier Reg. I specialise in crafting unique patterned jewellery, inspired by my love of the beautiful natural world combined with modern stylized shapes.

What is the festive season like for your shop?

The Christmas period is defiantly my busiest time, it starts to really ramp up around the second week of November and slows down by the third week of December.

What sort of arrangements do you make to deal with the increased workload?

This year I’m trying to get as much made as possible so when I get really busy I won’t have to do much making, this will hopefully make packing orders much quicker. I have been prepping stock since the end of August and trying to get all my stockists orders out by the end of October defiantly eases up the stress. Family members get roped in for packing duties, especially over Black Friday weekend which is my busiest time of the year.

Do you have any tips for other makers?

I would advise getting out of the studio for a bit as this defiantly helps the mind, I’m lucky to have the beach 10 minutes from my house so escaping with my dog for an hour is great, as well as a good night sleep. I try to stop working by 7 in the busy period or at least do easy jobs like box making on the sofa, preferably with a G&T.

Mica Peet will be at our Brixton Market at the Dogstar on Sunday the 3rd of December.

Hello! Tell us a little about yourself!

Hi I'm Hannah and I run Pup Tart alongside my dog Indy and some excellent helpers. We currently sew sparkly accessories at our brand new studio/shop in North London.

What is the festive season like for your shop?

Every year I say I'll be more prepared and every year I end up in a mad panic to get everything done. Christmas is our busiest time of the year. I would estimate that 60% if our business is made during the period Oct-Dec and every year it takes me by surprise.

What sort of arrangements do you make to deal with the increased workload?

I'm very lucky to have the help of some amazing crafty buddies who come in more often and cut out Christmas pudding bags and pack up orders. Our Pet Bow ties are very popular around this time so we try to have extra stock made up. We've also moved into a new studio which has much more room and making busy times more efficient. I spent 4 years running Pup Tart out of our leaky old conservatory so having lots of space is amazing. We just built an order packing desk which has made our lives so much easier.

Any anecdotes you would like to share?

I have so many silly ones (mostly about posting parcels). I once had to make bow ties during friends’ wedding weekend, everyone was helping the night before and we had to drive around the countryside looking for a post box. Another time there was a big rumour that there would be a late night Saturday post collection at our local post office. I was there in the middle of the night filling up the post box.

You can shop Pup Tart on Saturday 2nd December at the Dogstar, Brixton and on Saturday 16th December at Mercato Metropolitano, Elephant and Castle. Or attend the Pup Tart Pimp my Pouch workshop on Sunday 3rd December at the Dogstar, Brixton.

Hello! Tell us a little about yourself!

Hey, I'm Jo! I have been running Clement & Claude for 3.5 years. I started pouring candles on my kitchen table and selling them to friends and family. I now make the candles out of a studio in Walthamstow, I have about 20 stockists and I trade at regular craft fairs and markets. My main goal with the brand is to make affordable and original candles.

What is the festive season like for your shop?

It is MUCH busier! From October onward I have lots of orders coming in from my stockists as well as lots more online orders on my website. Christmas markets and shows also start around October/November time so there is lots going on.

What sort of arrangements do you make to deal with the increased workload?

I have an amazing candle maker called Lucia who helps out lots with the production of the candles. She usually does extra hours around the Christmas period, and helps out with packing up the stockist orders. I have also recently enlisted my parents! They help out with all of my online orders, packing up the candles and sending them out to the clients. This has been incredibly valuable as I work full time separately to the candles. I generally do extra hours in the evenings and weekends to make sure I am on top of all of the admin side of things. Lastly there is also lots of prep before each market - and lots of driving around London!

See more from Clement & Claude at on Saturday 2nd December at the Dogstar, Brixton and on Saturday 16th December at Mercato Metropolitano, Elephant and Castle.

Hello! Tell us a little about yourself!

Hi, I'm Mary-Ann and I run my creative lifestyle brand Hello Marilu, which I have been doing since July last year. I love designing and making, so all of my products are hand crafted in my South London studio. I screen print my art prints, notebooks and greeting cards, and hand paint ceramics such as plant pots and Christmas Baubles.

What is the festive season like for your shop?

This is my second Christmas running Hello Marilu and my schedule is already really full on in the run up to the big day! It is amazing how much busier Christmas is compared to the rest of the year. I think a big reason for this for me personally is because one of my best selling products are my hand painted Christmas baubles. Each bauble is hand painted and personalised with a name or message. The design is quite intricate and can easily take 20-25 minutes per bauble to paint. Last year I was working on a lot of orders from my home studio, and selling at markets and running my own Bauble painting workshops. This year I am actually working with Fortnum & Mason to offer a live personalisation service in-store, and running Christmas workshops for a few other brands. It’s great to feel that my little business is growing and getting opportunities like this. Of course I will still be selling my baubles on my website and I’m looking forward to taking part in a few Christmas markets as well.  It’s always lovely to meet customers in person!

What sort of arrangements do you make to deal with these changes? Do you work longer hours?

I will be working longer hours, and pretty much seven days a week. I think I only have one day off to look forward to from now until Christmas, which will be my birthday! It can be a little daunting when I look at everything I need to do but it’s also pretty amazing and I know I will be able to rest in January when it will be much, much quieter! I do realise I am lucky to be so busy and I want to make the most of every opportunity for my business throughout the season. I'm also very lucky to have friends and family who have offered to help with a few things. It can be hard working alone at times as you don't want to miss out on opportunities but also you can't physically do everything yourself.

Any anecdotes you'd like to share?

It’s not just Santa’s elves who stay up all night making Christmas gifts! I'm sure there are lots of makers who will be working pretty hard this Christmas season. I think it is great that more people, myself included, are supporting smaller brands and buying original handmade gifts.

You can catch Hello Marilou at our Night Market at the Geffrye Museum on Thursday 14th December.

Meet our guest curator: Lisa Comfort

For each of our markets, we work with an invited guest curator who has the challenging task of selecting traders from the many who apply. With the application deadline for the spring markets fast approaching, we are delighted to announce that we will be working with Lisa Comfort - a star of the craft scene, owner of sewing business, Sew Over It and East London local.

Meet Lisa......

Lisa Comfort grew up in a small Yorkshire village and fell in love with sewing when, aged 11, she was taught to make her first skirt. A year later her parents gave her a sewing machine and, despite being teased for her “uncool” hobby at school, Lisa was hooked.

Lisa studied French and Italian and then went to the London School of Fashion. She then worked for British designer Bruce Oldfield and bridal couture designer Phillipa Lepley. Lisa started teaching people to sew in the evenings and soon realised sewing was in danger of becoming a lost skill.

Lisa launched the Sew Over It brand in May 2011 with the opening of her first shop in Clapham.  Sew Over It quickly established itself as one of the leading contemporary one-stop sewing shops in the UK running classes, selling fabrics, haberdashery, patterns and kits and hosting a busy sewing café.

The second shop followed a few years later in Islington.  Lisa wanted to design patterns for stylish, fashionable clothes that people wanted to wear, create clear easy-to-follow instructions, inspire and help people to sew with her vlog and online tutorials, source unique fabrics and create kits which allowed her customers to buy into her personal style. Now her patterns are sold in John Lewis and Liberty and exported to places as far-flung as Australia to New Zealand, The USA to Canada, Norway to France and many more.

Lisa is also a writer and has published two books, Sew It, Wear It, Love It (2011) – an introduction to sewing for beginners, and Sew Over It Vintage (2012) – a beginner’s guide to making vintage inspired patterns.

Lisa has also guest edited Mollie Makes’ DIY Fashion bookazine and writes columns for Sew Magazine, Prima and Simply Sewing.  She has also been featured inMollie Makes, Psychologies, Prima, Red online and Homestyle (cover of issue 1).

She has also appeared on the Alan Titchmarsh Show and Kirstie’s Vintage Home

Lisa is the heroine for the now generation of young women who are quirky, creative, individual and practical and covet her look and lifestyle.   The launch of in 2017 builds on the heritage of Sew Over It, extendsing Lisa’s influence from sewing and crafting into interiors, fashion, beauty, travel, DIY and lifestyle and takes Lisa’s unique sense of style to a wider audience of women who live and love the handmade look.

Trader applications closed on 1st March (5pm)

Sheffield Market Shopping guide

This weekend we are coming to Sheffield for a very special market as part of the Weekend Of The Maker in association with Folksy and creative co-op The Roco.

Here are the curators top picks to whet your appetite:

Camilla Westergaard - Folksy

This is really difficult because there are so many designers and makers whose work I've been swooning over for years and I can't wait to meet them, see their displays and shop! But here is a trio of makers to look out for from what could have been a much longer list...

Joanna Wakefield Jewellery - Trading Sun 27th Nov

I love Joanna's work because she combines two of my favourite things - jewellery and textiles. Imagine a jeweller living in a haberdashery and you're on the right track. She also has a way of incorporating texture into her work that I think is really interesting and the way she displays her work is always beautiful too, so I know her stall will be something special.

Mister Charlesworth - Trading Sat 26th Nov

Emily mixes geometrics and florals with a gorgeously subdued colour palette and a mid-century feel. Last Christmas, my mum gave me a Mister Charlesworth screen print and it's a piece I will always treasure. It looks gorgeous in our dining room where it sits in an oak frame above the piano in all the shades of a dried hydrangea. This year, I've got my eye on her gorgeousSucculents Screen Print.

Sarah Papworth from Beetroot Press - Trading Sat 26th Nov

I may have an actual crush on Sarah. She's one of the nicest people ever and that comes through in her work, which is light and joyful – looking at her daily drawings on Instagram is one of life's genuine pleasures. Her illustration of a little scarf-wearing robin is currently on the front cover of our mini Christmas magazine, and I couldn't be prouder. I've heard Sarah is bringing lots of new prints to the market too, so I can't wait to see those.

Can I sneak in just one more? Can I? It's just a little Nook of the North. I'll bake everyone extra mince pies if one of her gorgeous stitched necklaces makes it under my tree this year.

Andrea Burns - Roco Creative Co-op

Ding Ding - Trading Sat 26th Nov

We spotted Ding Ding a while ago and instantly snapped up their hand printed clipboards for our menu holders in our cafe bar and people just love them. Having stocked these since we opened last November we have come back again this season to expand the range to include the zip bags and DIY plant pots which are such a simple but fun idea. I have a spiky cactus sat in one on my desk.

Grey Suit Clay - Trading Sat 26th Nov

Grey Suit Clay have become something of a cult brand in Sheffield over the last 12 months. The sleek but earthy stoneware finishes to their mugs, jugs and bowls speak to the 'retro east german minimalist pottery lover' in all of us which is brought bang up to date through these instantly recognisable modern shapes and colour ways. The plant hangers are a must for any self identifying botanophile, they hang on natural rope in strong support of your favourite greenery whilst steeling your eye to their beautifully crafted surfaces. Just lovely.

CAST -  Trading Sun 27th Nov
Cast have flipped the craft social on its head by offer a super refined quality lead experience in their DIY events, where over dinner or cocktails you are guided through the hand tooling of a wax mould for casting into a solid silver ring of of your designing They have now developed the product for the home market in their new box kits which we are also stocking in our design store. A really great gift for someone that little bit special.

Kayti Peschke - Crafty Fox Market

I was so excited to help choose the makers for this event and the final trader lineup is incredible, you are in for such a treat if you can make it down this weekend! I will certainly be doing all my Christmas shopping and supporting all these amazing designer makers, here are a few of my faves to look out for, but I have a feeling I will end up treating myself too, its all too tempting!

You Make Me - Trading Sat 26th Nov

I am a lover of all things colourful and kitsch so adore everything that Emily creates! She designs and laser cuts her accessories from her studio in the North East, and finds inspiration from vintage finds and retro packaging. I can’t wait to see what festive themed goodies she is bringing to the market to spice up this years decorations, and I’ve also have had my eye on her breeze block inspired earrings for a while so shall be picking up a pair of those for sure!

Scarlett and Valentine - Trading Sat 26th Nov

Sheffield local, illustrator and designer Aprille creates a colourful and bold collection of stationery and homewares, all with a playful and fun quality that just makes me smile! I’d love to pick up a few of her fabulous cushions to jazz up my sofa and think grabbing a handful of her cute prints will solve all those last minute Christmas gifts in one fell swoop!

Este Libro - Trading Sun 27th Nov

I am guilty of being the kind of girl that buys beautiful notebooks and journals, only to treasure them and never actually let any actual ink get in contact with the paper and spoil them! So when I came across Esther’s beautiful collection of handmade books I was very excited about getting my hands on them in real life. Blending modern design with ancient binding techniques, these are truly special pieces and will be a hit with all the stationery lovers who are coming down on Sunday, race you to them!
