Noriko Nagaoka Ceramics

Ceramics/Gift cards

Noriko's work is a celebration of nature's subtle beauty and dynamic forces. She is particularly inspired by elements such as trees, ocean scenery, mountains, and waterfalls. This inspiration is not merely representational but is embedded in the very process of her creations. She employs a distinctive technique of layered glazing, allowing gravity to play a significant role in the final appearance of each piece. This method results in unique, one-of-a-kind ceramics where the glazes interact to create organic patterns and textures reminiscent of natural phenomena.

A profound respect for the Japanese aesthetic and philosophical approach to craftsmanship underpins her practice. Noriko has expressed a deep admiration for the master potter Shoji Hamada, known for his spontaneous designs and clean, functional forms. This influence is visible in her work, which balances artistic expression with the practicality of tableware. She strives to achieve a harmony between the raw, earthy quality of the clay and the refined, often serendipitous, beauty of the glaze.

Noriko 's journey into ceramics was a conscious choice to pursue a creative path. After moving to London and exploring various artistic outlets, she found her calling in clay. Working from her garden studio in North London, she hand-throws her pieces, creating collections that range from tableware like sake cups and bowls to larger vases and plant pots. Each piece is a testament to her hands-on approach and her desire to create objects that bring a sense of nature and mindful appreciation into daily life.
